The chair design began with the idea of using a continuous piece of bent steel rod to form a frame to create a side chair. The fame itself went through several iterations and due to the limitations of tools, the frame had to be separated into smaller pieces instead of one piece of bent metal.

Bent Metal Chairs

This image depicts a digital iteration of the chair. The design was first created as a model out of wire and paper. These iterations helped in the understanding of how the metal pieces would interact with each other when made at full scale.

The steel rod for the frame was bent in strategic places to allow for a comfortable seated position. The pieces were then welded together.

Yellow Poplar Board was used for the seats of the chair. One chair uses navy parachute cord on the seat back to create a comfortable back support. The other chair uses black elastic to form a back rest.
